Our new way of thinking

Anchor Hocking has been in the business of making glassware products for more than 100 years.

As befits a company with our heritage, we do a lot of things the way we always have. For example, we manufacture virtually all of our products in Lancaster, Ohio, a town of some 35,000 people located 33 miles southeast of Columbus. (In fact, our current factory sits on the site of our very first one.) Then, too, we are as emphatic about the quality of our products today as we’ve always been – proud of how tastefully designed they are, of the value they represent for consumers, foodservice and the commercial sector, and of the fact that you’ll find them in the kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms of most every American home.

But there’s one way in which we have changed in recent years, and that is the corporate-wide commitment we’ve made to become a more environmentally friendly company.

To say that we’re there yet would be an overstatement. But it is an initiative we view as being vital to our future, and we’re taking many positive steps to make it happen.

• Consider that we currently reclaim on average 25% of our waste glass to reuse in our furnaces. That means fewer raw materials, less energy and less landfill waste.

• We’re also making changes in the design of our packaging to reduce their environmental footprint.

• Anchor Hocking's Supply Management Team is working with core suppliers to reduce waste and consider environmentally friendly alternatives.

• Our glass has what we believe to have inherent "natural" advantages. The primary ingredients of glass are sand and limestone, which come directly from Nature.

• Conservation is a fundamental benefit of glass. It’s reusable. You don’t throw it away.

• Whether you’re using it to cook, heat or drink from, glass doesn’t expose you or your family to harmful chemicals as many other materials such as certain plastics can. That’s because it doesn’t break down molecularly due to everyday use.

It’s not easy making sweeping environmental changes. But these days, environmental integrity matters a lot to you. We at Anchor Hocking are proud to say, it means just as much to us.
